Causes and effects of normalizing, tempering and quenching of carbon steel plates
Normalizing: Normalizing is a heat treatment to improve the toughness of steel. The steel member is heated to 30 ~ 50℃ above the Ac3 temperature, and then it is cooled by air for a period of time. The main characteristic is that the cooling speed is faster than annealing but lower than quenching, normalizing can make the steel crystal grain refinement in slightly faster cooling, not only can get satisfactory strength, but also can obviously improve the toughness (AKV value), reduce the cracking tendency of the component.
Two, tempering: tempering is a heat treatment process in which the workpiece is heated to a certain temperature below Ac1 (the beginning temperature of pearlite to austenite transformation when heated) after hardening. It is kept for a certain time and then cooled to room temperature.
Tempering is generally followed by quenching, with the purpose of:
(a) Eliminate residual stress generated during quenching of the workpiece to prevent deformation and cracking;
(b) Adjust the hardness, strength, plasticity and toughness of the workpiece to meet the performance requirements;
(c) Stable organization and size to ensure accuracy;
(d) Improvement and enhancement of machining performance. Therefore, tempering is the last important step in obtaining the desired performance of the workpiece. Through the combination of quenching and tempering, the desired mechanical properties can be obtained.
According to the tempering temperature range, tempering can be divided into low temperature tempering, medium temperature tempering and high temperature tempering.
Three, quenching: workpiece heating austenitizing after cooling in an appropriate way to obtain martensite or bainite structure of heat treatment process. The most common are water-cooled quenching, oil-cooled quenching, air-cooled quenching and so on.
Annealing, normalizing, quenching and tempering are the "four fires" in the whole heat treatment. The quenching and tempering are closely related to each other and are often used together.
